07.24.09 The Hold Steady - Stevie Nix

I was half dead, then I got born again.  I got lost in all the lights, but it was okay in the end.

I had never heard of the Hold Steady before the summer of 2006.  They opened for the Get Up Kids on their farewell tour stop in Jersey.  I remember everyone hating them.  There was booing and general anger (later that night, some drunk girl assaulted me so…it was a very angry show).  I was enamored.  There was just something about the music and the words and the lights that just changed my life.  I know that sounds so silly, but I’d never really fallen in love with an opening band that I’d never heard of before like that.  I will never forget them playing Stevie Nix and just watching, slackjawed, lost in that moment like they were just playing for me.  That night opened up a new world to me…the Lifter Puller-verse.

Craig Finn is fucking brilliant.  Everything he touches is gold.  I haven’t seen them play since I’ve loved them and I’m so excited for tonight, to finally see them and be able to sing along.  Tonight is going to be phenomenal.

It was the summer of 2005.

HAHAHAHAHAHAH I love that I don’t even remember when things in my own life happen.  Shit!!!!!! Four fucking years!!!!!!
