Real Talk: Chicago Edition

The year or so right after college, I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. I knew that I wanted to go back to school but knew that I did not want to continue literature study. It was a weird time. For awhile, I really wanted to get an MFA in nonfiction writing. I looked into several schools, deciding to apply to The New School, a school in San Diego, and my dream choice, School of the Art Institute of Chicago. I had never been, but when I received their brochures in the mail I fell in love. One of them was a thick magazine, with a cover printed on a gorgeous cardstock. I wanted nothing more to surround myself with this city I had never been to, studying writing and living a completely new life. I was obsessed with that then, just starting over somewhere I had never been.

I don’t know what happened. Whether it was frustration or disappointment or resentment, but by the time I applied to grad school, I only applied to Rutgers and decided if I didn’t get in, grad school just wasn’t for me. Life has a way of working itself out I guess. I love where I am now and I really couldn’t think of anything else I would rather be doing.

I don’t really wonder anymore what my life would have been like if I had gotten an MFA instead, but I have always wondered what it was about Chicago that drew me in for so long. Tomorrow I get to find out.

I am excited and nervous since my plan right now is pretty much just show up and doing stuff. I’ve got about 36 hours and I plan on making it count.

Oh yeah, and there’s that whole seeing the Promise Ring thing too, but that’s another story for another blog post. It’s good, I promise.
